Work with all you have, from where you are, to create the most beauty of all you are.
This motto, I am not sure where it came from, but it is what fuels my personal connection to the creative circuit. Where the writing comes from, I could not really say, but that the first draft is sometimes the best one. Sometimes the last of the 1000th time is the best take. Here in this recording is the first full-take of recording this poem to a melody. Though this was first written and recorded in 2018, Oslo, Norway, I thought I would share it with you this week. A week of renewal and reflection. While tumult seems to drive the world, there’s a deeper, slower moving, and softer movement happening. My hope is this message will invite ears to that space of peace and levity.
The Dark Makes the Stars Go Mad
its the dark
that makes the
stars
shine bright
we light off crackers
into the night
drawing lines
in the sand
boxes
from where we stand
we hope
our lines last
a lifetime
(when we sleep)
the tide comes
and takes
those lines
away
round and round
we circle
hoping
the rest
can
play along
but boo
you’ve been good
ra ra
you’ve been bad
and it’s the dark
that makes the stars go mad
we will our lives
between these moments
of ritual
claiming sanity
in the sand
we sink our feet
and sea
we a see a sea
we count the stars
and run away
from all the dark
drawing lines of right
and rules for wrong
when we all know
what gives life
what takes
all along
its the dark
that makes the
stars
go mad
just as all musicians
for all times
have always sang
truth
a song
its only for a
short time
we hold it conscience
and call it consciousness
raising up celebrities
to wave some flags
but the truth
you hold in your heart
what makes it break
what leaves its scars
boo
you’ve been good
ra ra
you’ve been bad
its the dark
that makes the stars
go mad
to feel light
we counter
it's not here
to stay
but out there
to say
boo
you’ve been good
ra ra
you’ve been bad
and it is the stars
that make
the dark go mad.
